Air Pollution
Chemical emissions from factories, cars, planes, and other activities pollute the air and lead to a reduction in air quality.

Lung Cancer
Particle pollution can cause adverse health conditions like pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, lung cancer, and emphysema.

Climate Change
Pollutants contribute to the increase in greenhouse gases that trap heat within our atmosphere, leading to rising sea levels and global warming.

Effects on Animals
Air pollutants can be inhaled by animals and weaken their immune systems, leaving them vulnerable to disease and in the worst case, death.

What can you do?
Check to see if there is a local bus route that you can take instead of driving a car to work! Some cities offer rentable bikes that allow people to get in their daily exercise while reducing the amount of pollution they produce.

How We Got Here

Urbanization is resulting in conversion of lands to be used for agriculture, to build structures and roads, to create dams to harness hydropower, amongst other purposes. These developments cause destruction or changes to natural terrain that lead to issues like deforestation, soil erosion, and the loss of homes for wildlife.
What can you do?
In addition to planting trees around your community, be aware of the amount of single-use packaging you use as a consumer and perhaps even offer an uncontaminated water source to animals right in your backyard!
Extreme Weather Events
A global phenomenon

FLOODS
For each 1 °C increase in the global temperature, the atmosphere will be able to hold up to 7% more water vapor. This phenomenon leads to the release of more water when it rains and increase the risk of flooding.
What can you do?
Plant more trees! Trees soak up the water, which help reduce erosion caused by falling rain.
DROUGHTS
Increased temperatures reduce available surface water and dries out soils. Lowered water supplies can result in limited access to water for communities, livestock and crops. This would increase water cost and the risk of food insecurity.
WILDFIRES

Climate change is increasing the frequency of wildfires, the wildfire season, and the burned area. Smoke from wildfires can cause irritation to the eyes and throat and worsen chronic heart and lung diseases.
Food Waste

In the US alone, an estimated 30-40% of food is wasted annually. As the food rots in landfills, greenhouse gasses such as methane are released. These gases trap heat in the atmosphere, causing global temperatures to increase.
What can you do?
Donate any surplus food and only buy what you need.
